eFoil insurance: what to look out for and what it costs

eFoil rider on the Adriatic – eFoil insurance guide

An eFoil is about freedom on the water – silent, fast and close to the sea. But the sea is shared with swimmers, boats and other riders, and a single mistake can cost far more than the board itself. Here is what you need to know about insuring your eFoil, and roughly what it costs.

Does my existing insurance cover an eFoil?

Usually not. Most private liability policies exclude damage caused by motor-driven watercraft – and an eFoil, with its electric motor, typically falls into that category. Household or travel insurance rarely covers the board itself either. If you want real protection, look for a policy that expressly names eFoils or electric surfboards.

Is insurance compulsory in Croatia?

It depends on the device. Under Croatian rules, compulsory third-party liability insurance applies to craft with propulsion power above 15 kW, and craft above 5 kW may be classified as a boat (brodica) with registration requirements. Most eFoils are below the 15 kW threshold – but that does not mean insurance is unnecessary. Rules on where and when you may ride (for example at least 50 m from the shore and never inside bathing areas) apply regardless. Details are in our complete insurance guide.

1. Liability insurance – the essential minimum

Liability insurance pays when you cause damage to someone else: you hit a moored boat, damage another rider's equipment or injure a swimmer. These are the costs that can become really high, which is why we consider liability cover the minimum for every rider.

Indicative price: from approx. EUR 40–60 per year, depending on the limit and the territorial scope.

2. Hull (casco) insurance – protecting the board

A premium eFoil is a significant investment. Hull insurance protects its value and usually comes in two levels:

  • Partial hull – damage you did not cause: theft, vandalism, fire, lightning, storms and other natural events.
  • Full hull – additionally covers damage you caused yourself, for example a collision with an obstacle in the water or damage while loading and transporting the board. Ideal if you ride often or travel with your eFoil.

Indicative price: approx. EUR 150–250 per year for a board worth around EUR 6,000, depending on the scope and the deductible.

Always check whether the battery and electronics are included – the battery is one of the most expensive parts of the board.

3. Accident insurance – protecting yourself

Neither liability nor hull insurance covers your own injuries. A water-sports accident policy can, depending on the programme, include compensation for injury, sea rescue, medical transport and selected treatment costs. Check that eFoiling is not excluded as a high-risk sport.

Indicative price: approx. EUR 50–180 per year, depending on the scope.

What it costs at a glance

  • Liability: from approx. EUR 40–60 / year
  • Hull (partial or full), board worth approx. EUR 6,000: approx. EUR 150–250 / year
  • Accident: approx. EUR 50–180 / year

Many insurers offer a lower price for combined packages – it is worth asking for liability and hull cover together.

Five things to check before you sign

  1. Is your brand and model expressly covered, including its motor power?
  2. Does the policy apply in Croatia and in the other countries where you plan to ride?
  3. Are the battery, remote control and charger included?
  4. How high is the deductible, and are theft and transport damage covered?
  5. Is it valid when you lend the board to someone else or use it commercially?

The bottom line

An eFoil is most fun when you are not worrying about what could go wrong. Liability cover protects others, hull cover protects your board and accident cover protects you. Choose the combination that matches how often and where you ride – and remember that the cheapest policy is not always the one that pays when it matters.
