eFoil care in salt water: what you need to know

eFoil on the Adriatic – salt-water care

Riding an eFoil on the open sea is hard to beat – clear water, long glides and the coast all to yourself. Salt water, however, is corrosive. Over time it attacks metal parts, bearings, screws and electrical contacts. The good news: a few minutes of care after every ride are enough to keep your board reliable for many seasons and to protect its resale value.

Why salt water needs extra attention

Modern eFoils from brands such as LIFT, HOBBYWING and JETBLADE are designed for use at sea. What causes problems is not the sea itself, but the salt that stays behind when the water dries. Salt crystals settle in gaps, threads and cooling channels, attract moisture and slowly start corrosion – often in places you do not see until something stops working.

1. After every ride: rinse with fresh water

This is the single most important step. Rinse the whole eFoil – board, mast, wings, motor and remote – thoroughly with fresh water, ideally right after you come out of the sea. Pay special attention to:

  • the motor and propeller area, including the propeller guard;
  • the cooling openings of the drive electronics – aim the water directly into them to flush out salt residue;
  • the remote control, especially the charging contacts;
  • screws, threads and the mast-to-board mount.

Use a normal garden hose or shower with gentle pressure. Never use a pressure washer – it can push water past seals into places where it does not belong. Keep the battery compartment closed while rinsing.

2. Let it dry – in the shade

After rinsing, wipe off the worst of the water and let the eFoil dry completely before you pack it into a bag or close it in a car boot. Avoid leaving the board or battery in direct summer sun for long periods – heat is not good for batteries or for the board's surface.

3. Check the seals regularly

Seals and O-rings protect the connections between the battery, board and drive. Inspect them regularly for cracks, deformation, sand or dirt. Clean them carefully and replace any damaged seal straight away – a worn seal costs little, water in the electronics costs a lot. Use only genuine seals for your model.

4. Protect contacts and threads

An occasional application of contact spray (electrical protection spray) helps drive out moisture and protects electrical connections on the battery and drive unit against corrosion. It is especially worthwhile if you ride at sea several times a week. A light spray also protects the threaded holes for the drive mounting plate and the wing screws, so they stay easy to undo. Always follow your manufacturer's instructions on which products are suitable.

5. Store and charge the battery properly

Store the battery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and charge it according to the manufacturer's instructions – including the recommended charge level for longer breaks, for example over winter. Before storing the eFoil at the end of the season, give it one more thorough fresh-water rinse and let it dry completely.

Quick checklist after every ride

  1. Rinse everything with fresh water – motor, cooling openings, remote, screws.
  2. No pressure washer, battery compartment closed.
  3. Dry completely, in the shade.
  4. Look at the seals and connectors.
  5. Store the battery cool and dry.

The bottom line

An eFoil is built for the sea – and with a few simple habits after every ride, it will stay that way. Five minutes with a hose is the cheapest service your board will ever get.
