A complete guide to insuring electric water sports in Croatia and Europe
Riding an eFoil or electric JetSurf gives a unique sense of freedom. Silent electric power, speed and the chance to explore the coast from a new perspective turn every moment on the water into something special. With modern equipment, however, comes responsibility: a collision, a damaged battery, theft or an injury to another person can mean significant costs.
The right insurance protects not only your investment, but also you and everyone else on the water. We recommend arranging suitable cover before your first ride.
Croatia has its own rules for recreational craft. The Ordinance on the safety of maritime navigation (NN 52/2025) treats boards, including electric boards, as personal craft (osobna plovila) with special rules of use – for example motor-driven personal craft may not operate closer than 50 m to the shore, may not enter marked bathing areas and may operate only from sunrise to sunset.
Whether liability insurance is compulsory does not depend simply on the fact that a device has an electric motor. Under the Ordinance on boats, small craft and yachts (NN 13/2020), craft with propulsion power above 5 kW may be classified as a boat (brodica) with registration and operator requirements, and compulsory third-party liability insurance applies to craft with propulsion power above 15 kW. The decisive factors are the device's legal classification, technical parameters, registration and the way it is used.
It is therefore wrong to assume automatically that every eFoil or JetSurf requires the same insurance as a motor boat – or that none needs any.
Our recommendation: even where it is not a legal obligation, arrange at least third-party liability insurance. When travelling abroad, check that the cover applies in every country where you plan to ride.
Liability insurance protects you against the financial consequences of damage caused to others. Imagine losing control of your eFoil and damaging a nearby boat, or accidentally injuring another person while manoeuvring. Costs of repairs, treatment or compensation can be many times the price of the board.
Depending on the policy, liability insurance may cover:
Indicative price: from EUR 39–49 per year.
Check that the insurer expressly covers electric watercraft, your specific model and its power. Ordinary private liability insurance often excludes damage caused by motor-driven watercraft.
Premium eFoils and electric surfboards are a significant investment. The scope of cover always depends on the policy; some exclude racing, commercial rental, loss at sea or damage from improper handling.
Depending on the programme, for example: theft, fire and certain natural events, vandalism, damage by selected external causes.
Broader protection, depending on terms, for example: impact with an obstacle, collision with another craft, damage during handling or transport, accidental damage in use, selected battery and electronics risks.
The battery is one of the most expensive components. Check whether the policy covers the battery, charger and other electronics, in particular: damage in an accident, theft, damage in transport, fire, water ingress and its exclusions, and the conditions for storage and charging.
Note: a manufacturing defect and accidental damage are two different situations. Manufacturing defects are handled under the seller's statutory liability for defects and any commercial guarantee; insurance cover depends on the specific policy.
Liability insurance covers claims of others and hull insurance covers your property – neither automatically covers your own injury. Consider accident insurance that includes water sports, which depending on the programme may cover compensation for injury, permanent consequences, rescue operations, medical transport and selected treatment and rehabilitation costs.
Always check that the terms expressly include eFoils and motor-driven surfboards – some travel or accident policies treat them as high-risk or excluded sports.
If you plan to ride in Croatia, Italy, Greece or elsewhere in Europe, check the territorial scope. A policy issued in an EU Member State does not automatically apply without limits in other countries. Also check whether it covers private use, lending the device to another person or commercial rental. For international use, ask for written confirmation of the scope of cover.
A policy for private use may not cover damage during commercial rental, organised activities, instruction or other business use. Rental operators, hotels, charter companies and water-sports centres should arrange business insurance that reflects the value of the equipment, the operator's liability and the nature of the services.
Price should never be the only criterion – a cheaper policy with major exclusions may protect you less when it matters.
